MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team recorded wins in both of its doubles matches on day two of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regionals in Charlottesville, Va., today.
The Mountaineers opened the day in doubles play with the freshmen duo of Kaja Mrgole
and Oana Manole
earning their second victory of the tournament, defeating Katherine Castro and Lolade Ogunbesan of Pitt, 8-6.
WVU’s top-doubles duo, ranked No. 7 in the region, comprised of sophomore Hailey Barrett
and junior Ikttesh Chahal
won its opening match of the tournament after having a first round bye yesterday. Barrett and Chahal downed William & Mary’s Melanie Roy and Sydney Smith
In the main singles draw bracket, Barrett fell to Virginia Tech’s Francesca Fusinato, 6-0, 6-3.
Mrgole, who leads the Mountaineers with five singles wins this fall, lost in straight sets to the No. 10-ranked Li Xi of Virginia, 6-4, 6-2.
In WVU’s third singles match of the day, Chahal was defeated by No. 8 Ilinca Stoica of the Hokies, 6-3, 6-0.
After tallying two victories on day one, sophomore Vivian Tsui
matched up against Pitt’s Katherine Castro in main singles draw bracket. Tsui continued her momentum from yesterday, winning her fourth singles match this season, 6-1, 6-1.
The Mountaineers open day three tomorrow, Oct. 20, with both doubles pairs playing at 9:30 a.m. Mrgole and Manole face off against Virginia Tech’s Carol Kahoun and Isel Martinez-Marcos. Barrett and Chahal will meet up with the No. 13-seeded tandem of Nikol Hristova and Melissa Esnal Olguin from Old Dominion.
In singles, Tsui will play the No. 2-seed Danielle Collins from Virginia tomorrow at 11 a.m., in the main singles draw bracket.
In the consolation bracket, Barrett will meet Howard’s Katelyn Stokes at 2 p.m., and Mrgole will play Cierra Plummer from Morgan State. At 3:15 p.m., Chahal will match up against Sophie Panarese of Georgetown.
