MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will close its non-conference portion of the season when it travels to American on Tuesday, Oct. 22, for a 3 p.m. match
West Virginia (6-6-2) is coming off a 1-0 victory against Georgia State last Saturday evening. Junior forward Andy Bevin
netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 69th minute to give WVU the shutout victory.
Bevin continues to lead the squad with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists) and sophomore Majed Osman
is second on the team with 16 points (5 goals, 6 assists). Bevin is the first Mountaineer to register 20 points since Shadow Sebele recorded 21 points (5 goals, 11 assists) in 2010.
Junior goalkeeper Lee Johnston
picked up his third shutout of the season against Georgia State, making six saves in the contest. Johnston lowered his goals-against average to 1.27 and he has made 34 saves.
American (4-6-3) fell 2-1 last Saturday at Army in overtime. American jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but could not hold the lead and allowed the game-tying goal in the 77th minute.
Freshman Joe Iraola has four goals to lead American with eight points. Senior Cristobal Soto, who scored a goal against Army, is second on the team with three goals. Freshmen Dale Ludwig and Michael Cherry have a team-leading three assists.
Senior Billy Knutsen has started all 13 games in net and has an impressive 0.87 goals-against average. Knutsen has four shutouts and has made 59 saves.
The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 3-1. Last season in Morgantown, WVU used goals by Eric Schoenle and Uwem Etuk to win 2-0.
