MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshmen tennis duo of Kaja Mrgole
and Oana Manole
fell today at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships in Charlottesville, Va., to the region’s top-ranked pair of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans of William and Mary.
“I thought it was a good tournament overall,” said Miha Lisac. “We had some good performances in singles and in doubles. Most importantly, we have seen where we need to continue to get better.”
The tandem fell 8-4 to the nation’s seventh ranked duo of Belaya and Loomans. Mrgole and Manole won three consecutive matches to reach the quarterfinal round.
In the main doubles draw, Belaya and Loomans meet No.10-seeded Raluca Mita and Francesca Fusinatio of Virginia Tech. Virginia’s pairings of No. 12 Maci Epstein and Caryssa Peretz and No. 2 Julia Elbaba and Rachel Pierson face off in the second semifinal match. Both matches, and the finals, will be played tomorrow, Oct. 22.
The finals of the main singles draw features two Cavaliers. No. 9-ranked Pierson meets up with teammate, No. 2-seeded, Danielle Collins tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The Mountaineers’ freshmen pairing is 4-3 this fall following today’s loss. Sophomore Hailey Barrett
and junior Ikttesh Chahal
, WVU’s top doubles team from a year ago, finished the tournament 1-1, and are 4-5 in the fall season.
Mrgole leads WVU with six singles match wins, one coming this weekend. Sophomore Vivian Tsui
