MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Nine members of the West Virginia University cross country team were named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Team.

“The academic commitment of this group continues to be rewarded,” says coach Sean Cleary. “I want to offer up a big thank you to the entire academic support staff within our department, most especially Sandy Cole.”

Eight Mountaineers landed spots on the academic first team, led by sophomore journalism major Kelly Williams, who has a cumulative 4.0 GPA.

Seniors Kaitlyn Gillespie and Sarah Martinelli, juniors Savanna Plombon, Lydia Martinelli and Allison Pettit and sophomores Peyton Hampson and Paige Szabat all joined Williams on the first team, while senior Chelsea Jarvis was named to the second team.

“The student-athletes at West Virginia University have support at the highest levels of our great university to excel both on and off the field,” Cleary says. “I am very proud that this group of young ladies are living up to their potential in all aspects of their lives.”

This year marks the second-consecutive season Gillepsie, Martinelli and Williams earned first-team selections, and the second-straight year Jarvis was named to the league’s second team.
