MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team opened day one of the Big Green Invite in Hanover, N.H., with a sweep in doubles play against UMASS.

The Mountaineers came back strong in the afternoon's session after having early struggles on day one, sweeping the Minutemen in doubles play. Sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal combined for an 8-5 victory over Yuliana Motyl and Aarzoo Malik for their fifth win this fall.

Mrgole and Manole tallied their fifth win as a duo, downing UMASS' Sonia Bokhari and Arielle Griffin, 8-6.

WVU started the day in doubles play against Boston. The Mountaineers fell to the Terriers in all three matches. Barrett and Chahal stumbled against Johanna Hyoty and Leonia Athanasiadi, 8-1. The freshmen tandem of Mrgole and Manole, fresh off three wins at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regionals, dropped its match to Kim McCallum and Barbara Rodriguez, 8-6. Sophomore Irinka Toidze returned to action after sitting out at the USTA/ITA Regionals with partner sophomore Vivian Tsui, but fell 8-2 to Lauren Davis and Craft.

In singles, WVU continued its woes against Boston. Barrett dropped two straight sets to Davis, 6-2, 6-4. Mrgole, who leads the Mountaineers with six wins this fall, lost to Hyoty, 6-0, 6-2.

Manole battled Rodriguez, dropping set one, 7-6, but rebounded in set two with a convincing 6-1 victory. In the final set, Manole was unable to hold off Rodriguez, falling 6-2.

In the No. 4 singles position, Tsui lost in straight sets to Athanasiadi, 6-1, 6-1. Chahal matched with Iris Lin in the No. 5 spot. Lin defeated Chahal, 6-4, 6-3. Toidze won her first set back in singles play, 6-3, against McCallum, but dropped the final two sets, 6-2, 6-0.
