MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University cross country team posted a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships earlier today in Waco, Texas, at the Cottonwood Golf Course.

No. 8 Iowa State won the meet with a team score of 35, while the Mountaineers finished with a team score of 104.

“As a team, I could not be prouder of this group,” says coach Sean Cleary. “We are very happy with the second-place finish. Some of these young ladies ran the race of their lives today.”

Senior runner Sarah Martinelli was the first Mountaineer to cross the finish line, coming in eighth-place overall with a personal-best time of 20:44.9 to earn All-Big 12 honors.

The 20:44.9 finish was also the best time from a West Virginia runner this season.

Sarah Martinelli did a wonderful job today, earning herself All-Big 12 honors,” Cleary says. “We have two weeks to get a few of the girls up to the level that I know they can run at. I have complete belief that we will run our best race of the year at the NCAA Regionals.”

Junior Savanna Plombon was the second Mountaineer to cross the line, finishing in 21st place overall (21:25.5). Sophomore Kelly Williams (21.32.7) and freshman Jillian Forsey (21:34.0) weren’t far behind, coming in 24th and 25th, respectively.

Freshmen Paige Szabat (21:35.5) and Amy Cashin (21:51.3) also recorded top-40 finishes, completing the course in 27th and 38th place, respectively.

The conference championship for the Cyclones marked their third-consecutive Big 12 title. West Virginia improved on its fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships a year ago.

Oklahoma State finished in third place (116), Texas came in fourth (121) and Baylor and Kansas State finished in fifth and sixth place, both recording team scores of 123.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Nov. 15, at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bethlehem, Pa. – a course WVU has already seen twice this season.
