MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Less than two months stand between the West Virginia University gymnastics team and the start of the 2014 season. The final stretch of their preseason preparation begins tomorrow, Nov. 18, as the Mountaineers will partake in their annual Fall Classic intrasquad.
Competition will begin at 3 p.m. at Cary Gym, and fans are invited to stop by and watch the team in action.
The Mountaineers will split into two teams – the Pilgrims and the Turkeys – and the squads will compete routines in front of judges for the first time this preseason. Scores will be awarded, and third-year coach Jason Butts will declare a winning team.
“We have worked really hard throughout this preseason, and I’m very happy with where we stand going into the Fall Classic,” says Butts. “Tomorrow will be the first time this year’s team gets critique and feedback from outside sources, and I’m excited for the gymnasts to show some great gymnastics. This is the next step to get us prepared for December’s Gold-Blue Meet and the 2014 season. Both will be here before we know it.”
The four Mountaineer seniors will lead the two squads, with Hope Sloanhoffer and Erica Smith competing for the Turkey Team, and Amanda Carpenter and Bethany Yurko competing for the Pilgrims.
Also competing for the Turkeys are: juniors Lia Salzano and Jamie Judge, sophomore Lindsey Litten and freshmen Brooklyn Doggette, Alexa Goldberg and Emma Lasker.
Competing for the Pilgrims are: juniors Dayah Haley and Beth Deal, sophomores Melissa Idell and Jaida Lawrence, and freshmen Rachel Sine, Nicolette Swoboda and Mackenzie Myers.
A recap of tomorrow’s completion will be posted at WVUsports.com.
