MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Two runners from the West Virginia University cross country team competed in the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, Nov. 30.
Mountaineer freshman runner Jillian Forsey
finished in second place overall in the 5K with a time of 18:02.45, while sophomore runner Megan Yuan
came in fifth place overall, finishing in 18:22.48.
“These were two excellent performances by Jillian and Megan,” says coach Sean Cleary. “After running in the Big 12 Championship, the NCAA Regional Championship and the NCAA Championships over the past four weeks, and to still have the stamina to perform so well in these championships, is a testament to their conditioning.”
Forsey's second-place finish automatically qualifies her for the Canadian National Team, which competes in Trinidad and Tobago in February.
“For Jillian to be selected for the national team is a great honor,” Cleary says. “We can now sit back and draw up a plan that will best allow her to be on top of her game for this experience.”
Yuan could still qualify for the national team, as the team hasn't been fully determined to this point.
Heather Petrick of the Niagara Olympic Club won the 5K with a time of 17:47.
