MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman defender Kadeisha Buchanan has been named to the 20-player Canadian Women’s National Team that will compete at the 2013 Torneio Internacional Cidade de Sao Paolo, held Dec. 11-22 in Brasilia, Brazil.

Buchanan, a Brampton, Ontario, native, is a Full Canadian National Team member. Most recently, she, along with 18 additional prospective Canadian players for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, traveled to Copehagen, Denmark, for a 12-day Women’s National Excel Camp last July.

The team will open competition against Scotland on Dec. 11 and will face Chile four days later. The squad will close the round-robin portion of its schedule against Brazil on December 18. A classification match will be held on Dec. 22, marking the close of the calendar year for Team Canada.

Canada last participated in the tournament in 2010 and finished first.

Buchanan is coming off a stellar rookie season with the Mountaineers, as she started all 23 matches at center back. She was named the Big 12 Conference Defender and Rookie of the Year and helped WVU win its second straight conference regular-season title and first Big 12 Soccer Championship. Buchanan helped the WVU defense post 10 shutouts this season, including four in postseason play, and hold its opponents to 24 goals. Additionally, she finished with three points (1 G, 1 A).

Buchanan, along with senior forward Frances Silva and freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence, was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Central Region First Team on Wednesday. Additionally, she is a nominee for the 2013 BMO Canadian Player of the Year and the Canadian U-20 Player of the Year awards. Lawrence also is a nominee for the U-20 award. Winners for both awards will be announced next week.
