MORGANTOWN, W.Va.Frances Silva and Kadeisha Buchanan of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team were named to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-America Second Team.

“This is an amazing honor for both athletes,” says Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “These two played like All-Americans all season, and this is a tribute to the hard work they put in this year.”

Silva and Buchanan are the first Mountaineers to earn second-team recognition since Carolyn Blank scored consecutive honors in 2008 and 2009. This is the fourth time in program history multiple Mountaineers have earned NSCAA All-America honors in the same season, and the first time since 2008 that more than one student-athlete has garnered an award. WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown has coached 11 players to 15 NSCAA All-America honors in 18 seasons.

Silva, a senior forward, was named one of 15 semifinals for the 2013 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy earlier this week. The Overland Park, Kan., native’s latest honor is just one of the many awards she has received this year, as she also was a unanimous selection as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Big 12 Championship Offensive MVP. An All-Big 12 First Team selection, she led the conference in goals (15), assists (13), and points (43), and currently ranks No. 23, No. 7 and No. 10 in the NCAA in the respective categories. Her assist total is a WVU single-season record, while her point total ranks No. 2 all-time and her goal mark ranks No. 4.

Buchanan, a freshman defender, is the first Mountaineer rookie to earn NSCAA All-America honors. The Brampton, Ontario, native started all 23 matches at center back and helped the WVU defense post 10 shutouts, including four in postseason play, and hold its opponents to 24 goals. The Big 12 Conference Defender and Rookie of the Year, she also tallied three points this year (1 G, 1 A). Buchanan is a Full Canadian National Team member and was named to the 20-player Canadian Women’s National Team yesterday. She will compete at the 2013 Torneio Internacional Cidade de Sao Paolo, in Brasilia, Brazil, next week.

The duo helped lead the Mountaineers (16-4-3, 7-1 Big 12) to their second straight Big 12 regular-season title and first Big 12 Soccer Championship this season. The Mountaineers bowed out of the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Nov. 22 with a 1-0 loss at No. 1-seed and College Cup-bound Virginia Tech.
