MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track and field team opened its 2013-14 season at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker in Youngstown, Ohio, on Saturday.
The Mountaineers took a small group to the event to kick off the season with participants in the pole vault, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay.
“This was a nice opener for these girls,” says coach Sean Cleary. “We brought a small group, but got out of this competition what we needed.”
Senior Katlyn Shelar recorded a first-place finish in the pole vault, with a mark of 3.75 meters, while freshman Bria Welker posted a second-place finish in her first appearance as a Mountaineer in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.71.
Welker, a native of Ridgeley, W.Va., also had a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.07.
“Shelar looks like she is ready for a strong winter, while Welker starts off her collegiate career on a positive note,” Cleary says.
The WVU 4x400 relay team of Welker, sophomore Ashanti Bess, senior Allison Tyree and sophomore Alyssa Scherich came in third place overall with a time of 4:04.89.
West Virginia will have a five-week break before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the PSU Relays in State College, Pa.
