Wrestling Wins Three at Hoosier Duals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The West Virginia University wrestling team improved to 6-2 on the season with three wins today, Dec. 7, at the Hoosier Duals. The Mountaineers defeated Drexel, 25-8, VMI, 38-3, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 27-3.
"It was a good first day. I thought we wrestled well," says coach Craig Turnbull. "We dominated three dual meets today. Drexel was a very strong lineup, and we had to work hard through the individual matches. I think we are satisfied on the first day and now we need to regroup to come back tomorrow."
In the day's first match against the Dragons (3-9), freshman Cory Stainbrook (125) gave WVU an early lead with his 11th win of the season. Stainbrook defeated Tanner Shoap by major decision, 10-1.
Senior Colin Johnston (141) gave the Mountaineers the lead back after No. 20 senior Nathan Pennesi dropped the 133-pound bout. Johnston scored two early takedowns for the 4-2 decision over David Pearce. Johnston's win sparked a six-bout win streak for the Mountaineers. Juniors Mike Morales (149) and Brutus Scheffel (157), sophomores Ross Renzi (165) and Bubba Scheffel (174), and senior Mac Mancuso (184) all won by decision.
Leading 22-5 heading into the 197-pound match, Drexel's Bryan Sternlieb ended the run with a 5-4 decision over freshman Leo Trindade. A late takedown and riding time advantage gave Sternlieb the bout.
Sophomore A.J. Vizcarrondo (HWT) sealed the victory for WVU with a 3-1 decision over Joe Giorgio.
After defeating the Dragons 25-8, the Mountaineers faced off against the Keydets. Stainbrook tallied his second win of the day to start WVU off with a lead, defeating Dalton Henderson 8-2. Pennesi won his first bout of the day, coming back with a major decision over Mike Flora, 9-0.
With wins from both Johnston and Morales, sophomore Jason Luster (157) scored bonus points with a technical fall win over Ted Gottwald, 21-6. Luster recorded four takedowns in the first period, and then scored two nearfalls and four more takedowns in the second.
Leading 24-0 after Renzi won by decision, Bubba Scheffel moved one pin closer to tying the program single-season pin record (13), winning by fall over Timmy Davison. Sophomore Mark Colabucci (184) followed the bout with a technical fall of his own over Jake Koch, 21-5.
Trindade tallied WVU's final points of the match, winning by decision over Tasi Mathias, 5-1, to give the Mountaineers the 38-3 victory.
Day one of the Hoosier Duals concluded against SIUE. WVU won the first nine bouts to jump out to a 27-0 lead before Vizcarrondo dropped the heavyweight-bout by a 6-4 decision.
Stainbrook, Johnston, Morales, Renzi and Bubba Scheffel all went 3-0 on the day. Brutus Scheffel and Mancuso each stayed undefeated on the weekend with two wins.
The Mountaineers finish the Hoosier Duals tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 8, against Indiana at 11 a.m., and Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. The Hoosiers are 5-0 this season and 3-0 this weekend. The Bears are 2-4 overall and 0-3 through today's matches.
