Rifle Concludes Air Gun Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five members of the No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team competed at the USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championships, Dec. 6-8, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
 
Sophomore Garrett Spurgeon ranked sixth overall at the championships with a 1852.5 aggregate score, also placing third overall at the junior level. He shot his best score on Saturday, shooting a 619.0 mark and a 121.5 showing in the final, placing fifth overall.
 
On Friday he placed 10th overall and seventh in junior’s with a 615.9 score and 99.7 final showing. Spurgeon also placed fourth overall and seventh in junior’s on Sunday, shooting 617.6.
 
Redshirt-freshman Jean-Pierre Lucas shot a three-day total of 1837.3, placing 14th overall. He had a fifth place junior’s finish on Friday with a 611.6 mark and 141.5 score in the final. Lucas shot 611.3 in the open relay and a 163.0 in the final on Saturday for a junior’s fourth-place finish, and 614.4 on Sunday for a 12th-place finish.
 
Junior Thomas Kyanko shot 621.9 and 98.7 in the final on Friday, placing seventh in the men’s open relay. He shot 615.3 on Saturday, placing eighth, and had a 605.5 showing on Sunday.
 
Junior Meelis Kiisk shot an aggregate 1845.4, placing 11th overall. The Paide, Estonia, native shot 614.4 on Friday, placing 12th in the men’s open relay. He shot 615.4 on Saturday, placing ninth, and 615.6 for the 11th-place spot on Sunday.
 
Senior Chance Cover shot 602.1 on Friday, 603.3 Saturday and 600.5 on Sunday, for an overall score of 1805.9.
 
Spurgeon and Lucas were selected for the 2014 Bavarian Airgun Championships junior level shooting. The championships are Jan. 19-26, in Munich, Germany.
 
The Mountaineers (6-0, 4-0 GARC) will return to the WVU Rifle Range and begin spring semester competition against Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foe NC State on Jan. 19.
