MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team opens its spring season against Akron on Friday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m., at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers competed in four tournaments during the fall semester, highlighted by third-place finishes by the doubles pairings of sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal, and sophomore Vivian Tsui and freshman Oana Manole at the USAFA Invitational in September.
In doubles play, WVU’s top duo from a year ago of Barrett and Chahal posted five wins in the fall. The freshmen tandem of Manole and Kaja Mrgole combined for five wins as well.
Mrgole, a native of Slovenia, recorded six wins in the first semester to lead the Mountaineers, including a team-high four consecutive. Barrett, the team’s top returner from 2012-13, and Tsui each claimed five matches.
WVU finished last season 4-17, with wins over Marshall, Marquette, California (Pa.) and Rutgers.
The Zips open their season with a three day, four-match road trip, starting at Robert Morris this afternoon. Akron went 18-10 last season and finished eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Midwest region.
All fans are encouraged to bring proper tennis gear with them for a free 30 minute clinic following the singles matches. Free pizza will be provided, along with a raffle for fans.
Ridgeview Racquet Club is located at 211 Everhart Drive in Morgantown. From downtown, take Stewartstown Road and proceed to Route 119W. Turn left onto 199W and continue 1.3 miles to Bakers Ridge Road, and travel 0.7 miles to Ridgeview Business Park. Turn left into the park and proceed down to the club.
