MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman gymnast Alexa Goldberg has been named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week today.

The Ivyland, Pa., native scores her first career conference honor on the heels of her second straight uneven bars victory. This is the first Big 12 honor of the season for the Mountaineers (1-3) and the third time a WVU gymnast has earned the newcomer honor.

Currently ranked No. 1 in the conference on bars, Goldberg again anchored the Mountaineers’ lineup and tallied a 9.875 at Maryland on Jan. 17 for the event win. The score marked the second consecutive week she earned at least one 9.9 score from one judge, as she also won the event at Kentucky on Jan. 10 with a career-best 9.925.

Through two weeks of competition, Goldberg ranks No. 4 nationally (9.9 avg.) and No. 3 in the Southeast region on bars.

In addition to her bars performance, Goldberg scored a career-high 9.775 on floor and finished fourth overall with the meet’s third-best score.

No. 1-ranked Oklahoma earned two awards this week, as junior Erica Brewer was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the second straight week, and senior Lara Albright earned the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week honor.

The Mountaineers closed out their two week, season-opening road trip with a narrow 193.675-193.5 loss at UMD on Friday.

WVU opens its 2014 home season this Sunday, Jan. 26, against NC State, at 3 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. Sunday is a “Dollar Day,” and all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas are available for $1 each. WVU students get in for free with a valid WVU student I.D. Sunday also is a “Poster Day,” and fans may pick up a 2014 schedule poster featuring the Mountaineers.
