No. 3 Rifle Wins Withrow Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The final standings for the 2014 Withrow Invitational were released by Murray State today, and the No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team finished first with a season-best 4710 score.
The Mountaineers’ aggregate score is the top mark shot in the NCAA this season.
No. 1 Kentucky placed second (4683), while No. 3 Jacksonville State finished third (4672) and Ohio State placed fourth (4651).
Junior Maren Prediger won air rifle with a 598 score, while classmate Ziva Dvorsak shot a season-best 597 and placed second. Sophomore Garrett Spurgeon placed fourth with a career-high 594, and junior Taylor Ciotola finished ninth with a season-best 590.
Spurgeon finished second overall in smallbore with a season-best 587. Dvorsak finished fifth with a 584 mark, and junior Meelis Kiisk shot 583 and finished seventh. Additionally, senior Daniel Sojka’s score of 579 was good enough for 10th place.
WVU shot at the Winthrow Invitational on Friday, Jan. 24. The team followed that outing with a 4690-4655 victory at No. 11 Memphis on Jan. 25.
The Mountaineers (8-0, 6-0 GARC) are idle this week. The team will close out its home season with two big matches next week at the WVU Rifle Range. WVU plays host to No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks on Thursday, Feb. 6, and the top-ranked Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 8. The match with UK will determine the regular-season Great American Rifle Conference champion.
