– Following a season-best performance, West Virginia University gymnast Hope Sloanhoffer
has been named the Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week.
Today’s honor is the second career Big 12 award for the senior. Additionally, it is the second consecutive award for the Mountaineers (2-3), as freshman Alexa Goldberg
was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 21.
Sloanhoffer, a native of Cornwall, N.Y., tallied a season-best 39.35 in the Mountaineers’ 195.425-195.4 victory over NC State at the WVU Coliseum on Jan. 26 and won her second straight all-around title. The point total was Sloanhoffer’s best showing since scoring a career-high 39.5 at the 2012 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship at Pitt.
In addition to her all-around win, Sloanhoffer also scored three event titles. She earned her second straight vault victory with a 9.85 showing and also tied Goldberg for the bars win with a 9.825. Additionally, she finished first on floor with a 9.9, matching her career-best total.
No. 1 Oklahoma’s McKenzie Wofford was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, while teammate Chayse Capps won her second newcomer of the week award.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 2, and play host to George Washington and Towson at 3 p.m., at the second annual “Wendy M. Roach Invitational.” The invite is a “Pink Meet” to promote breast cancer awareness, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink. The team will accept sundry item donations for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center at the Blue Gate.
