Volleyball Celebrates 2013 Season with Banquet
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team celebrated one of its most accomplishing seasons in program history this past weekend inside Touchdown Terrace at Milan Puskar Stadium.
The Mountaineers held their annual year-end banquet recognizing their achievements both collectively and individually throughout the 2013 season.
Director of Athletics Oliver Luck was one of many in attendance to reflect on the many steps taken forward by the Mountaineers this past season.
Coach Jill Kramer thanked staff members before presenting awards to particular team members.
Freshman Jordan Anderson and sophomore Brittany Sample each claimed the Tough as Nails award, senior Liz Gulick and freshman Hannah Shreve earned the Academic Achievement Award, senior Elzbieta Klein took home the Be a Mountaineer distinction and sophomore Hannah Sackett was presented the Achievement, Effort, Attitude Award.
“Our annual banquet gives us the opportunity to celebrate our season. Our 2013 team accomplished a lot of great things together, due to their work ethic and commitment to the program and one another,” says Kramer. “They embody the spirit of the Mountaineer Way.
“We still have a lot we want to accomplish. The team is working hard to bring our hopes and dreams to reality.”
Team Honors and Accomplishments in 2013
-First 20-win season since 1991
-10-0 start was the best in program history
-Won 20 consecutive sets, tying the school record
-11 sweep wins
-Two of the top four and three of the seven largest home crowds in program history came in 2013
-Decreased opponents’ hitting percentage from .228 last season to .195 this season
-Finished No. 74 in the final RPI rankings - 118 spots higher than a year ago
-Improved Team hitting percentage from .145 in 2012 to .191 in 2013
Individual Honors and Accomplishments in 2013
-Freshman Jordan Anderson was the first Mountaineer to earn AVCA All-Region Honors since 1988
-Coach Kramer tallied her 50th career win as a head coach
-Senior Liz Gulick was named Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District
-Anderson was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, earned Big 12 Honorable Mention and was a three-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week honoree
-Sophomore setter Brittany Sample surpassed 2,000 career assists and 550 career digs
-Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Sackett recorded double-digit kills in eight straight matches - the longest streak in program history since 2007.
-Six Mountaineers earned Academic All-Big 12 recognition
