MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team travels to Huntington, W.Va., to take on in-state rival Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m.
“We need to continue doing the things that we have been talking about since the fall,” says coach Miha Lisac. “We have made progress, but there is a lot more work to be done. That is the focus point going into the match this weekend. One of our goals is to continue to give ourselves opportunities to close out matches. We have been in those situations thus far, but there are steps we need to take in order to close them out.”
The Mountaineers (0-2) come off a 6-1 loss to undefeated Liberty at the Charleston Indoor Racquet Club on Jan. 25. Sophomore Hailey Barrett tallied her first singles victory of the spring, 6-0, 6-1, over the Flames' Rebekah Jenkins, while the freshmen tandem of Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole stayed unbeaten in doubles play.
Sophomores Vivian Tsui and Barrett, and Manole and Mrgole lead WVU in singles play this season, each tallying a victory in one of the two matches.
The Thundering Herd enters the contest 2-0 in the spring, with victories over Radford and Morehead State. Kai Broomfield, Anna Pomyatinskaya and Karli Timko lead Marshall with 2-0 marks in singles play, while the duo of Dana Oppinger and Derya Turhan are unbeaten in doubles competition.
WVU leads the all-time series with the Herd, 21-14. In last year's matchup, the Mountaineers downed Marshall, 4-3, in Morgantown. The win ended a 10-year drought against the Thundering Herd that dated back to 1998. Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal recorded victories in singles play, while also teaming up for a victory in doubles.
Complete results will be made available on WVUSports.com following the conclusion of the match.
