MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two West Virginia University gymnasts were bestowed weekly Big 12 Conference honors today.
For the second straight week, senior Hope Sloanhoffer
has been named the Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week. Additionally, freshman Nicolette Swoboda
has earned the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award.
Today’s honor is the third career award for Sloanhoffer and the first career honor for Swoboda. Through four weeks of competition, WVU has snagged four weekly honors, as freshman Alexa Goldberg
scored the newcomer award on Jan. 21.
The duo finished 1-2 in the all-around in the Mountaineers’ season-best 195.5 showing in wins over Towson (192.425) and George Washington (191.825) on Feb. 2 at the WVU Coliseum.
Sloanhoffer won her third straight all-around title with a 39.325 showing. Additionally, she also won a share of three event titles for the second consecutive week. The Cornwall, N.Y., native finished first on floor with a 9.875 showing. She also scored 9.825 on bars and beam for the event wins. The beam score was a season high, the second week she has set a high on the event. Additionally, Sloanhoffer finished third on vault with a 9.8, the meet’s second-best score.
Currently, Sloanhoffer sits at No. 15 on the Mountaineers’ Career Points All-Time List with 1,524.725 points.
Swoboda was equally impressive Sunday, scoring a career-best 39.075, her first career 39.0+ mark, and finishing second overall. The Westbury, N.Y., native set or matched career highs on three events, including vault, where she tallied 9.875 for the win. She also matched a career high of 9.775 on floor, finishing fifth, and tallied a career-best 9.75 on bars for sixth place. Of note, Swoboda opened the floor lineup for the first time this season and helped the Mountaineers score a season-best 49.025.
No. 2 Oklahoma’s Rebecca Clark was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week for the second time this season.
The Mountaineers open their Big 12 season at Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The competition will be the squad’s first Big 12 regular-season meet away from the WVU Coliseum.
