West Virginia University wrestling sophomore A.J. Vizcarrondo
has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for competition from Feb. 4 through Feb. 9.
Vizcarrondo picks up the first award of his career and becomes the third Mountaineer, second-consecutive, to earn the weekly honor this season.
Vizcarrondo (HWT) notched his second victory over a ranked opponent this season, defeating No. 17 Ross Larson of No. 10 Oklahoma on Feb. 6. He scored first with a takedown midway through the first period, but Larson knotted the bout at two. Vizcarrondo tallied his second takedown of the match in the second period to regain a two point advantage. After a third takedown and an escape, Vizcarrondo won the decision, 9-7.
Vizcarrondo scored three takedowns in the first minute of the bout against Ed Isola of Davidson on Feb. 7. He finished the first period with four takedowns, taking an 8-2 lead into the second period. A fifth takedown in the second and sixth in the third sealed the major decision for Vizcarrondo, 15-5.
Vizcarrondo finished the week with nine takedowns, two escapes and a two-point nearfall between the two bouts. He is 18-14 on the season and 5-5 in dual meets.
The Mountaineers (10-5, 0-3 big 12) finish their home schedule on Friday, Feb. 14, at the Beauty and the Beast at the WVU Coliseum at 6 p.m. against Clarion.
