Baseball Defeated by Delaware

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite a strong debut by junior right-hander Sean Carley, the West Virginia University baseball team fell 3-1 to Delaware on Saturday evening.
 
Carley took the no-decision and did not allow a run, giving up just two hits in 6.0 innings. Carley struck out five batters without issuing a walk.
 
West Virginia (0-2) had 10 hits to Delaware’s five, while the Mountaineers committed one error.
 
Freshman designated hitter Jackson Cramer, junior shortstop Taylor Munden and freshman right fielder Shaun Wood had two hits apiece in the losing effort.
 
Munden scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after leading off the frame with a single through the left side. Munden scored from second on a single to left field by junior left fielder Jacob Rice.
 
Delaware used a three-run seventh inning to take a 3-1 lead. Ty Warrington doubled to left center field, driving in two runs, and Jake Clark executed a successful squeeze play to score Warrington from third base.
 
The loss went to sophomore righty Ryan Hostrander, who allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit without recording an out. Junior righty Michael Bennett finished the game for West Virginia, giving up just one hit in 2.2 innings and striking out three.
 
Dan Gatto picked up the win for Delaware after going 6.2 innings and allowing one run on nine hits. The save was awarded to Luke Alicknavitch after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings.
 
EJ Stoltzfus had two hits to lead the Blue Hens at the plate.
 
The Mountaineers will complete play tomorrow against The Citadel at 1 p.m. Junior left-hander John Means will be making his first start of the season. Live stats will be available through WVUsports.com.
