MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  - The West Virginia University tennis team is set to host the University of Charleston on Friday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m., and the University at Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m., at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“I think Saturday’s match against Buffalo will be another challenge, similar to what we have been facing so far,” says coach Miha Lisac. “The goal for us is to take some of the things we did well last weekend and put them into this weekend, and upgrade our play to a higher level. We had a better approach last week and that is what we are looking for going into this weekend’s matches.”
The Mountaineers (1-5) come off a pair of road losses in Norfolk, Va., from Feb. 14-15. WVU fell to Richmond, 4-1, and Old Dominion, 6-1.
Freshman Kaja Mrgole leads the Mountaineers with a mark of 4-1 in singles play this season. During the fall, Mrgole led the squad with six singles victories. Mrgole and freshman Oana Manole have teamed up in doubles to lead WVU with three wins. During the fall, the No. 9-ranked tandem in the Atlantic Region tied the duo of sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal for the team lead with five wins.
Manole is 3-1 in singles play and is coming off a 6-3, 3-6 (10-3) victory at Old Dominion. She is currently on two-match win streak dating back to Feb. 1 at Marshall.
The Mountaineers are 12-1-1 all-time against Charleston, with WVU downing the Golden Eagles, 8-1, in 2009. The Mountaineers meet up against Buffalo for only the second time in program history, with the first meeting in the Bulls’ favor, 6-1, last season.
In last year’s match, sophomore Vivian Tsui came away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Buffalo’s Marta Stoyanova.
