MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Freshman Jillian Forsey of the West Virginia University Cross Country team will participate at the 2014 North American, Central and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Forsey will represent the Canadian National Team after qualifying for the event this past November.
“Jillian has presented a great opportunity to garner international experience,” says coach Sean Cleary. “This meet is very important to our program. When I sit with recruits and incoming freshmen, we talk about the importance of running for your country when opportunities present themselves.”
The Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador native, finished in second place overall in the 5K with a time of 18:02.45 at the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, Nov. 30. Her second-place finish automatically qualified her for this weekend’s NACAC Championships.
“Jillian has done a tremendous job of training with the extreme weather we have experienced. We both agree that she is in peak shape as she prepares to leave for competition,” Cleary says.
Three of the last eight women’s individual champions have been WVU alumni. Megan Metcalfe did so representing Canada in 2006, Clara Grandt did for USA in 2009 and Kate Harrison did for Canada in 2011
“WVU has a great record at this competition with past All-Americans Megan Metcalf, Clara Grandt and Kate Harrison winning at this prestigious event. Others that have found success are Keri Bland and Marie-Louise Asselin. As you can see, this is a who’s who of past WVU greats, and we feel Jillian is headed in that same direction.”
