Tennis Soars Past Golden Eagles

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  – The West Virginia University tennis team tallied its second win of the season at Ridgeview Racquet Club, defeating the University of Charleston, 6-1.
The Mountaineers (2-5) swept the Golden Eagles in doubles play, led by the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole in the No. 1 position. Mrgole and Manole downed Ana Maria Pena and Kelsey Hensley, 6-0, for their team-best fourth win in doubles this season.
Freshman Sophie Allen-Fisher made her first appearance this season, teaming up with junior Ikttesh Chahal for a 6-0 win over Charleston's Marieve Edwards and Taylor Todd. Sophomores Irinka Toidze and Vivian Tsui combined for their first win in doubles this spring, knocking off Jackie Bakos and Mallika Mali, 6-1.
Leading 1-0 in team scoring, the Mountaineers recorded five more victories in singles play. Mrgole won her team-best fifth match, bringing her season mark to 5-1. She defeated Pena, 6-0, 6-3. At the No. 2 position, Chahal won her first singles match of the spring, beating Hensley, 6-3, 6-3.
Manole improved to 4-2 on the year with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Edwards, while Toidze and Tsui each won their second match of the season, defeating Todd, 6-0, 6-2, and Bakos, 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
West Virginia will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 22, against Buffalo at 1 p.m. at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. The Mountaineers are 2-1 in Morgantown this season.
