MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University junior gymnast Beth Deal has been named the Big 12 Conference Specialist of the Week.
The Parkersburg, W.Va., native earns her first career honor following a winning, career-best 9.95 showing on beam at the Perfect 10 Challenge on Feb. 14, in Oklahoma City.
Deal is the first Mountaineer to earn the event specialist honor this season. Four Mountaineers have earned a combined five awards this season.
With the pressure on, Deal followed a fall in the lineup with a near-flawless routine. Her winning score matched the second-best mark ever scored by a Mountaineer gymnast in program history, and she was the first to hit the point total since senior Hope Sloanhoffer did so against Arkansas at the WVU Coliseum on March 10, 2012.
Deal ranks a team-best No. 10 on beam in the Southeast region with a 9.735 regional qualifying score (RQS). She ranks No. 7 in the Big 12 Conference.
No. 2 Oklahoma’s Haley Scaman was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week, while teammate Kara Lovan scored the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor.
The Mountaineers (5-7, 0-2 Big 12) welcome No. 22 Ohio State for their WVU Coliseum regular-season finale on Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m. Sunday is a “Dollar Day,” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for $1 each. Additionally, it is a “Gold Rush,” and gold shakers will be given to the first 200 fans, courtesy of Coke Zero. Fans also are encouraged to wear gold. Finally, WVU will honor its four seniors – Sloanhoffer, Erica Smith, Amanda Carpenter and Bethany Yurko – following the competition.
