MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman Kadeisha Buchanan has been named to the Canadian Women’s National Team for the 2014 Cyprus Cup.

The Brampton, Ontario, native has become a fixture on the national team. The defender played all 90 minutes in the team’s 1-0 loss to the United States Women’s National Team on Jan. 31. She also played the full 90 minutes in three of the squad’s four matches at the Torneio Internacional Cidade de Sao Paolo in December.

Team Canada will open the group stage on March 5 against Finland, at the GSZ Stadium, in Larnaca, Cyprus. From there, the team will meet Italy, also in Larnaca, before concluding group play against England on March 10, at the GSP Stadium, in Nicosia.

The 2013 Canadian U-20 Player of the Year, Buchanan is coming off a strong first season at WVU. She started all 23 matches at center back and helped the Mountaineer defense post 10 shutouts. She was named to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-America Second Team, the first Mountaineer rookie to earn NSCAA All-America honors, and also was named the Big 12 Conference Defender and Rookie of the Year.

Buchanan helped lead the No. 12-ranked Mountaineers to their second straight Big 12 regular-season title and first Big 12 Soccer Tournament title. The Mountaineers advanced to their 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament and concluded their season with a 1-0 loss at No. 1-seed Virginia Tech in the second round on Nov. 22.
