MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team is set to compete in five matches during the 2014 spring season, including a season-opening tilt against the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Western New York Flash.
“The spring season is a great opportunity to get better,” says Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We are playing a good mix of teams this year, and we will use these matches as a measuring stick against great opponents.
“This is a well-balanced schedule that includes a professional team, NCAA-qualifying teams and competitive collegiate squads. It will be a good test.”
The Mountaineers open the season on Saturday, March 22, with a 3 p.m. match against the Flash in Elma, N.Y. Featured on the Flash’s roster are United States National Team members Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach.
“That match is a great opportunity for this team to play against some of the best athletes in the world,” says Izzo-Brown. “This is also a great chance for our athletes to display their skills in front of a professional coaching staff.”
Following the opener, the Mountaineers host three straight matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU will welcome St. Francis on Saturday, April 5, at 4 p.m., and Ohio State on Saturday, April 12, at noon. The squad will close its home spring slate against Alderson-Broaddus on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
WVU will conclude its spring season at Maryland on Saturday, April 26, with kickoff at 12:30 p.m.
The Mountaineers officially open their spring season Saturday, March 1, with their annual 4-versus-4 tournament to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. The all-day “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” event at the Caperton Indoor Facility is a tournament for boys and girls in grades three through eight, with an open division for college-age and older groups.
