MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 1, 2014) – The West Virginia University tennis team travels to State College, Pa., to match up against Penn State on Sunday, March 2, at noon.
The Mountaineers (2-6) split last weekend’s contests, downing Charleston on Feb. 21, 6-1, and falling to Buffalo, 5-2, on Feb. 22. Freshman Oana Manole
and sophomore Vivian Tsui
tallied wins in singles play in both contests. Manole has won four consecutive matches.
Freshman Kaja Mrgole
and Manole are currently tied for the team lead with five wins in singles play this spring. During the fall, Mrgole recorded a team-best six victories, while Manole notched four. Together, the freshman tandem is ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic Region in doubles, and currently sport a mark of 4-2.
The Nittany Lions enter the contest 3-7 and 0-1 in Big Ten Conference competition. In its last match, Penn State fell to Ohio State, 7-0, on Feb. 25. Dasha Sapogova leads the Nittany Lions with eight victories in singles this spring. Penn State started the season ranked No. 49 as a team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), but have since slipped out of the latest polls.
West Virginia is 1-22 all-time against the Nittany Lions, with the last meeting ending 5-2 in Penn State’s favor. Junior Ikttesh Chahal
