Mountaineers to Take on No. 5 Baylor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.The No. 11/10 West Virginia women’s basketball team will take on No. 6/5 Baylor at 2:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.
Sunday’s game will determine the regular-season Big 12 Champions. If Baylor wins, it takes the title, however, if West Virginia wins Sunday, followed by a win over Kansas on March 4, then the teams will share the title.
The only WVU women’s basketball team to win a regular-season conference title was the 1992 team that won the Atlantic 10 Regular Season title, finishing 16-0 in the league.
The Lady Bears lost their only conference game at Kansas, 76-60, on Jan. 19, while WVU dropped a 66-63 decision at Texas on Jan. 25. Baylor defeated WVU, 78-62, in this season’s first outing on Jan. 8.
The Lady Bears are 25-3 overall and 15-1 in Big 12 play, sitting atop the league standings. The Mountaineers are 25-3 overall and 14-2 in league action.
As a team, Baylor ranks third in the nation for 85.8 points per game. BU leads the Big 12 Conference in scoring margin, defeating opponents by 24.2 points per game. The Lady Bears also hold a league-leading 44.4 field goal percentage, and rank second in the standings for their 34.8 percent shooting from 3-point range.
Odyssey Sims currently leads the nation as she averages 29.9 points in all games and 30.4 points per Big 12 outing. Sims shoots 43.5 percent from 3-point range, the second-highest percentage in the Big 12, and her 87 threes is the most of any player. Sims averages a league-leading 3.1 threes per game. The last time Baylor came to the WVU Coliseum, Sims set a career record with 48 points.
Baylor’s 19.6 assists per game leads the Big 12 and ranks fifth nationally. Sims and Niya Johnson lead in the assists column with 137 and 182 assists, respectively. Johnson leads the nation with a 3.84 assist/turnover ratio.
Nina Davis averages 14.0 points per game as the only other Lady Bear averaging scoring numbers in double figures. Davis is also Baylor’s leading rebounder with 8.8 boards per game. Makenzie Robertson aids in the 3-point shooting with 46 threes this season.
Sunday’s game will be broadcasted live nationally on Fox Sports 1 with Ron Thulin and Brenda VanLengen.
