MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior left-hander John Means
provided the West Virginia baseball team its third quality start of the weekend en route to a 5-1 victory over James Madison on Sunday afternoon in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at TicketReturn.com Field.
The win improves WVU’s record to 5-4 and a weekend sweep as the Mountaineers defeated Duke on Friday and Coastal Carolina on Saturday.
Offensively, WVU pounded out 14 hits from nine different players. Five players had two hits apiece, led by junior second baseman Billy Fleming
, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Means (2-1) allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Senior lefty Zach Bargeron
pitched a perfect eighth inning and senior righty Corey Walter
closed out the ninth inning.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the third inning, the eighth time this season that WVU has scored the games first run. Fleming hit a two-out single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score as senior first baseman Ryan McBroom
poked a ball through the right side.
WVU’s lead increased to 3-0 in the fourth inning with another two-out rally. Junior catcher Cam O’Brien scored from third base on a single up the middle by senior shortstop Michael Constantini
. Constantini then stole second base and was promptly driven in by a double to center field off the bat of junior shortstop Taylor Munden
Junior center fielder Bobby Boyd
laced a double down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate Munden, bringing the score to 4-1. Boyd was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple. The Mountaineers then pushed the lead to 5-1 as Fleming scored his second run of the game on a single to center field by senior left fielder Jacob Rice
The Mountaineers peppered James Madison starter Chris Huffman (2-1), who allowed five runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts in his first loss of the season.
Kevin Husum and Ty McFarland led the Dukes with two hits apiece.
WVU will return to California for the second time this season next weekend for two games at UC Riverside and one game against Sacramento State. Links to live stats will be available via WVUsports.com.
