MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After jumping out to an early lead, the West Virginia University tennis team fell to Penn State, today, in State College, Pa., 6-1.
The Mountaineers (2-7) clinched the match's doubles point after the No. 9 ranked tandem in the Atlantic Region of freshman Oana Manole and freshman Kaja Mrgole tallied its fifth win of the spring, downing Marie Bedard and Dasha Sapogova, 8-6. The sophomore duo of Irinka Toidze and Vivian Tsui defeated the Nittany Lions' (4-7) Taylor Shukow and Lisa Petruzillo, 8-6, for its second consecutive win.
In singles, West Virginia stumbled, giving up six matches to Penn State. Manole's four match win streak came to an end after falling to Dasha Sapogova in the No. 2 singles spot, 6-2, 6-0. This was the first match this season that Manole competed at the No. 2 singles position. Manole is 5-3 in singles this year.
After dropping the first set 6-4, junior Ikttesh Chahal battled her back way against Carmen Sandor, but fell 7-6 in the second set, losing the tiebreaker 7-2.
At No. 4 singles, Tsui's two match win streak from last weekend's contests against Charleston and Buffalo from Feb. 21-22 ended with a 6-4, 6-2, loss to Marie Bedard.
The Mountaineers return home on Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, to host Cornell and West Virginia State. Both matches will be played at the Ridgeview Racquet Club at 2 p.m. and noon, respectively.
