Squires Named Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior Tim Squires has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week following his performance at the 2014 Big 12 Championships.
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native won both of his individual races, setting two new school records in both the 50 free (19.32) and 100 free (42.92). Both of his individual event times also qualified for the NCAA “B” cut. For his performance at the meet, the conference named him the Men’s Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet.
Squires was also part of four relay teams that set four new school records. Squires closing split of 19.09 in the 200 free relay helped earn a NCAA “A” cut time of 1:17.87, automatically qualifying the team for the NCAA Championships. The other three relay teams all qualified for the NCAA “B” cut.

This Week in Women’s Basketball
The WVU women’s basketball team plays host to Kansas at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers are in contention for a share of the Big 12 Regular-Season title with a win on Tuesday … Tuesday is senior night; there are five seniors on this year’s team, Asya Bussie, Christal Caldwell, Brooke Hampton, Jess Harlee and Taylor Palmer, who will all be recognized … in addition to celebrating the seniors, the Mountaineers say thank you with Fan Appreciation Night … small popcorn and small drinks will be available for only $1 each … the first 1,500 fans will also receive senior posters courtesy of Coke Zero.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball
The Mountaineers went 2-0 last week in Big 12 play, defeating Texas Tech 69-37 on Feb. 26 at the WVU Coliseum and taking a 71-69 victory over No. 6/5 Baylor on Sunday … Sunday’s win puts the Mountaineers in a tie with the Lady Bears for first place in the league … the win also snapped Baylor’s 39-game home conference win streak … the Mountaineers joined Stanford as the only team to shoot 50 percent against Baylor in a span of 282 games … Baylor’s point total (69) matched a season low.
