RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior left-hander John Means pitched six shutout innings to lead the WVU baseball team to a 7-4 victory over UC Riverside on Sunday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex.

The win gives the Mountaineers (8-4) their second consecutive weekend series sweep and they have now won six games in a row.

Means (3-1) fired 74 pitches and recorded six strikeouts and one walk, allowing just one hit. Seniors Zach Bargeron, Ryan Tezak, Joby Lapkowicz and Corey Walter relieved Means for the final three innings. Walter picked his second save of the season in a perfect ninth inning.

Senior first baseman Ryan McBroom knocked in his 17th run of the season in the first inning on a single up the middle that scored junior center fielder Bobby Boyd. The run marked the 11th time this season in 12 games that the Mountaineers have scored the first run of the game.

West Virginia struck for four runs in the fourth inning as freshman right fielder Shaun Wood hit his first career home run, a two-run shot to right field. Junior shortstop Taylor Munden and Boyd then drove in a pair of two-out runs, extending the lead to 5-0.

Boyd scored his second run of the game in the top of the seventh inning following a two-out single into left field off the bat of senior left fielder Jacob Rice.

Junior second baseman Billy Fleming scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth following a double steal and an errant throw by the UCR catcher to third base. The ball flew over the third baseman’s head and into left field, allowing Fleming to easily score.

UC Riverside’s Mitch Patito (0-1) was charged with the loss. Patito went one inning and gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout. The Highlanders used six pitchers in the losing effort.

West Virginia continues the West Coast swing with its first midweek game of the season at UNLV on Tuesday, March 11 at 9:05 p.m. Links to live stats, video and audio will be available via WVUsports.com.
