Tennis Downs Yellow Jackets, Falls to Big Red

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 9, 2014) – The West Virginia University tennis team split its home weekend, defeating West Virginia State, earlier today, 6-1, and falling to Cornell, yesterday, 5-2.
 
The Mountaineers (3-8) rebounded in doubles against the Yellow Jackets, claiming both matches that were played. The No. 9-ranked tandem of freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole downed Brittany Franco and Andreea Slusarcinc, 8-2, after falling to the Big Red's duo of Alexandra D'Ascenzo and Marika Cusick, 8-3, on Saturday.
 
In No. 2 doubles, junior Ikttesh Chahal and sophomore Irinka Toidze teamed up to dominate West Virginia State's Charlotte Sandy and Nadia Grlj, 8-1.
 
In singles, West Virginia claimed five matches over the Yellow Jackets, led by Mrgole's 6-3, 6-2 victory over Franco. Mrgole won both her matches this weekend, knocking off Dena Tanenbaum of Cornell, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-3. Mrgole leads the team with seven victories in singles play this spring.
 
At No. 4 singles, Tsui tallied two more victories, defeating the Big Red's Lauren Frazier, 6-2, 6-2, and Sandy of West Virginia State, 6-2, 6-2. Tsui has now won four of her last five matches in singles.
 
Manole captured her first victory at the No. 2 singles position, beating the Yellow Jackets' Slusarcina, 6-3, 6-0. Manole opened the weekend with a 7-5, 7-3 loss to D'Ascenzo of Cornell. She has tallied six wins this spring.
 
The Mountaineers open up Big 12 play with Kansas State on March 14 and Kansas on March 15. Both matches will be held at the Ridgeview Racquet Club at 1 p.m. And 11 a.m., respectively.
