MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  - West Virginia baseball junior left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.
Musgrave led WVU to an 8-1 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon, striking out six batters over six innings of shutout ball. The Nutter Fort, W.Va., native allowed just three hits, and has not allowed a run in his last 16 innings of work. 
Musgrave is now 3-0 on the season through his first four starts, recording a 1.78 ERA. He has 33 strikeouts and has walked just two opposing batters, while holding teams to a .156 opponent batting average.

This Week in Women’s Basketball
The West Virginia women’s basketball team will face No. 9, and top-seeded Baylor in the 2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship tonight at 9 p.m. ET … the game, which takes place at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., will be broadcast live nationally on Fox Sports 1.

The Mountaineers defeated TCU, 67-59, in the Big 12 Quarterfinals on Saturday, before eliminating Texas, 67-60, in the Big 12 Semifinals, Sunday … coach Mike Carey was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year, while five other league honors were awarded to the WVU women’s basketball team … senior center Asya Bussie was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and All-Big 12 Defensive Team … sophomore guard Bria Holmes was named to the All-Big 12 First Team … senior guard Taylor Palmer earned the Big 12’s Sixth Man Award, while senior guard Jess Harlee joined Bussie on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.

With Sunday’s semifinal win over Texas, the Mountaineer moved to 29-3 overall this season … the 29 wins matches the 2010 season for most wins in a season in program history … the last time WVU won a conference tournament title was in 1989 with the Atlantic 10 Conference … the Mountaineers have played in a conference championship title game two other times under coach Mike Carey, in 2006 and in 2010, both in the Big East Conference … WVU and Baylor split the regular-season series at 1-1 … WVU and the Lady Bears shared the regular-season conference title, while Baylor defends its tournament title as it was the tournament champs the last three seasons.

The Mountaineers (11-7, 0-3 Big 12) took fourth at the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla., on March 8.

Six WVU grapplers placed at the tournament, led by sophomore A.J. Vizcarrondo’s (HWT) second-place finish … freshman Cory Stainbrook (125), senior Nathan Pennesi (133), junior Mike Morales (149), sophomore Tim Wheeling (157) and senior Mac Mancuso finished in third place in their respective weight classes … Stainbrook, Morales, Scheffel and Vizcarrondo earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships from March 20-22 with their performances in Norman. 
Coach Craig Turnbull: “The primary goal of today was to get as many people to the national tournament as we could. It appears that we will get five, maybe six through. We will find out when the selection committee meets next week. The gold standards are likely to go, but it was a great performance tonight from Stainbrook and Vizcarrondo, wrestling themselves to the national tournament. The real bubble person is Pennesi.”

West Virginia continues its West Coast swing with its first midweek game of the season at UNLV on Tuesday, March 11 at 9:05 p.m., before opening a four-game series at Cal State Northridge.

The Mountaineers recorded their second consecutive weekend series sweep and have now won six games in a row ... WVU took two games from UC Riverside and one from Sacramento State.

Junior pitcher Harrison Musgrave continued his dominance on the mound, while recording a win over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon ... WVU put forth its best road score of the season in a 198.325-194.925 loss at Florida on March 7 … the squad’s mark was fueled by 49.0+ scores on vault and floor, including a season-high 49.1 on floor … senior Hope Sloanhoffer finished fourth (38.55), and freshman Nicolette Swoboda fifth (38.5) … Sloanhoffer paced on bars with a seventh place, 9.825 score … she also paced the team on vault with a second place, 9.875 mark … additionally, she finished a team-best 9.85 on floor, good enough for sixth … junior Beth Deal finished a team-best fifth on beam with a 9.875 score.

The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will visit the White House on Monday, March 10, for NCAA Champions Day … they will meet with President Barack Obama in the afternoon to celebrate the team’s 2013 National Championship … the Mountaineers (10-0, 7-0 GARC) will make their seventh straight appearance at the NCAA Championships and compete for a nation-best 16th title this weekend, March 14-15, at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range and CFSB Center, in Murray, Ky.
