MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team fell to No. 35 Kansas, 7-0, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club, today.
The Mountaineers (3-10, 0-2 Big 12) fell behind early to the Jayhawks, dropping two doubles matches. The freshmen tandem of Oana Manole
and Kaja Mrgole
was defeated by Dylan Windom and Paulina Los, 8-4. At the No.3 doubles position, sophomores Vivian Tsui
and Irinka Toidze
snapped their three-match win streak, losing to Claire Dreyer and Morgan Barnhill, 8-3.
In singles, Windom knocked off Barrett, 6-3, 6-2, to extend KU's lead to 2-0. At the No. 2 singles position, Mrgole claimed the first set over Maria Jose Cardona, 6-4, but stumbled in the second and third, 6-1, 6-1.
Battling Maria Belen Luduena, Manole took the first set, 6-4, before giving up the next two, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 6 singles, Toidze fought her way back after dropping the the first set to Morgan Barnhill, 6-3. Toidze forced a tiebreaker by winning the second, 6-3. She fell behind 5-2, but once again fought back to within one before falling, 10-6.
West Virginia hits the road next week, taking on Baylor in Waco, Texas, on March 21, and Texas in Austin on March 23 at noon.
