MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia baseball team has added a game at No. 12 North Carolina on Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
West Virginia (10-6) most recently went 5-2 on a trip to the West Coast, and has won eight of its last 10 games.
Junior center fielder Bobby Boyd
led WVU at the plate last week, batting 8-for-17 (.471) with six runs, one double, two RBIs, three walks and five stolen bases. Boyd is batting .362 this season with two doubles, seven RBIs and a team-leading 12 stolen bases.
Senior first baseman Ryan McBroom
continued to drive in runs, batting 7-for-17 (.412) with two runs, one double, one homer and six RBIs. McBroom leads the team in batting average (.365), homers (5) and RBIs (23).
Joining Boyd and McBroom above the .300 plateau are junior second baseman Billy Fleming
(.349), freshman right fielder Shaun Wood
(.306) and senior left fielder Jacob Rice
Coach Randy Mazey will send junior left-hander John Means
(3-1, 1.64 ERA) to the mound after Means missed a start last weekend due to schedule changes. Means has struck out 14 in 22.0 innings and opponents are hitting just .203.
North Carolina is 14-5 overall and took two of three games last weekend at Maryland. The Tar Heels have won 13 of their last 15 games.
Infielder Wood Myers leads UNC at the plate with a .297 batting average, four doubles and eight RBIs. First baseman Joe Dude leads the team with three home runs and catcher Korey Dunbar has a team-leading 17 RBIs. As a team, North Carolina is batting .266 with 32 doubles, two triples and 10 home runs in 19 games.
Right-hander Luis Paula (1-0, 1.42 ERA) will get the start for North Carolina. Paula has struck out 15 in 12.2 innings, allowing four runs, two earned on 10 hits.
