WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite junior left-hander Harrison Musgrave striking out seven in nine innings, the WVU baseball team fell 2-1 to UNCW Wilmington in 10 innings on Friday evening at Brooks Field.
Coming off his first loss in over a year last weekend, Musgrave (3-1) allowed just one run on five hits and one walk in the no-decision. Musgrave retired 26 of the 32 batters he faced.
Musgrave’s counterpart, left-hander Mat Batts (0-2) was equally as impressive in a no-decision, firing eight innings and allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Right-handed reliever Pascal Paul (0-1) came on to relieve Musgrave in the 10th inning and allowed the game-winning run on a chopper to the pitcher by Casey Golden that scored Terence Connelly from third base.
The Mountaineers fall to 11-7 overall, and had one run on six hits with no errors. UNC Wilmington (10-10) scored two runs on eight hits with no errors.
After striking out the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning, Musgrave allowed three-consecutive singles to left field with the third off the bat of Luke Dunlap scoring Ryan LaGrange to give UNCW a 1-0 lead.
Junior shortstop Taylor Munden drove in the game-tying run in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 1-1. Junior designated hitter Max Nogay drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a ground out by senior right fielder Michael Constantini. Junior Trevor Simms pinch ran for Nogay and came around to score on a bloop single to right field by Munden.
West Virginia had a chance to win it in the top of the ninth when junior second baseman Billy Fleming and senior first baseman Ryan McBroom led off with singles, but three straight outs ended the Mountaineer threat.
The teams return to action for game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. A pair of right-handers will see the mound with junior Sean Carley going for WVU and Jordan Ramsey will get the start for the Seahawks. A link to live video and stats is available via WVUsports.com.
