Sloanhoffer Named Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - On the heels of her Big 12 Conference all-around victory, senior gymnast Hope Sloanhoffer has been named the Varsity Sports Report Student-Athlete of the Week.
Sloanhoffer, a Cornwall, N.Y., native, won the Big 12’s all-around crown on Saturday, March 22, with a 39.425 score at the WVU Coliseum. She is the first Mountaineer gymnast to win a Big 12 title in program history. Sloanhoffer also matched her career-best floor score of 9.9 and finished tied for third in the event. She earned All-Big 12 Championship Team honors for both events.
Sloanhoffer was stellar throughout the championship, as she matched her season-best beam score of 9.875 and tied for fourth place. She also scored 9.825 on vault and bars.
Ranked No. 23 nationally, Sloanhoffer is a lock to individually qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships.

The Mountaineers defeated 15th-seeded Albany, 76-61, in the NCAA First Round on Sunday to continue in the NCAA tournament … senior guard Christal Caldwell and sophomore guard Bria Holmes each had 20-point outings with 26 and 20 points, respectively … Holmes’ point total was her third consecutive 20-point game … senior center Asya Bussie recorded a game-leading 12 rebounds.

After spending the first six weekends on the road, the WVU baseball team will play four home games this week and will open Big 12 play … the Mountaineers will host Pitt in the Backyard Brawl on Tuesday, March 25 at Hawley Field with a first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. … WVU will then make its lone trip to Appalachian Power Park to host Baylor in a three-game series over the weekend … Friday’s game will start at 2 p.m., Saturday’s game will begin at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s finale, which will be televised by Fox Sports 1, is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.

The Mountaineers went 2-2 last week … in a game that was a late addition on Wednesday, WVU upset No. 12 North Carolina, 5-1 ... at UNC Wilmington over the weekend, WVU fell 2-1 in 10 innings on Friday, won 9-3 on Saturday and fell 13-10 on Sunday to drop its first series in the last four weekends.
