WVU Opens Big 12 with Baylor in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team will open the Big 12 season by hosting Baylor in a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va., this weekend.
Game one of the series begins at 2 p.m. on Friday, game two begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday and first pitch for game three is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. All times listed are Eastern Time.
Sunday’s game will be televised on Fox Sports 1, while the games on Friday and Saturday will be video streamed on WVUsports.com. The radio broadcast will be on select affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG College, with Morgantown affiliate WMMN 920 AM serving as the flagship station.
West Virginia (13-8) most recently defeated Pitt, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field behind three hits off the bat of senior first baseman Ryan McBroom. Junior shortstop Taylor Munden and junior center fielder Bobby Boyd added two hits and two runs each.
Junior second baseman Billy Fleming paces the Mountaineer offense, batting .405 with two doubles and nine RBIs. McBroom leads the team in home runs (5) and RBIs (27) with a .386 batting average. Boyd also is over the .300 batting average mark at .363.
Coach Randy Mazey will send junior left-hander Harrison Musgrave (3-1, 1.98 ERA) to the mound on Friday, followed by junior right-hander Sean Carley (4-0, 2.82 ERA) on Saturday and junior left-hander John Means (4-1, 1.45 ERA) on Sunday.
Last Friday at UNC Wilmington, Musgrave fired nine innings, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in a no-decision. Carley improved to 4-0 last Saturday, giving up three runs, two earned, on nine hits in six inning with three strikeouts and four walks. Means last pitched in a win at North Carolina, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Baylor coach Steve Smith will counter this weekend with left-hander Brad Kuntz (4-0, 1.64 ERA) on Friday, right-hander Austin Stone (3-1, 0.97 ERA) will pitch on Saturday and right-hander Dillon Newman (2-1, 2.86 ERA) will take the mound on Sunday.
WVU enters the series ranked fourth in the Big 12 with a .292 team batting average, and the Mountaineers are No. 4 in team ERA (3.23). Baylor is ninth in batting average (.229) and eighth in team ERA (3.59).
Newman and Stone have earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks. Last weekend, Stone threw a complete game three-hitter at Oklahoma State, allowing one run with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Baylor is led at the plate by catcher Brett Doe, who is hitting .313 with four doubles and three RBIs. First baseman Mitch Price has one home run and a team-leading 13 RBIs, while Grayson Porter has one homer and 12 RBIs.
