MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – FC Kansas City announced the signing of former West Virginia University women’s soccer All-American Frances Silva.
An Overland Park, Kan., native, Silva, a forward at WVU and a midfielder for the Blues, along with three additional members of the Blues’ 2014 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft Class, agreed to her first professional contract earlier this week. Per team and league policy, terms of the agreement are not disclosed.
“It’s really exciting to take the next step in my career and to play with other professionals at such a high level,” says Silva. “I’m very excited to see what this season holds for my team.”
“We were very happy with our draft in January and thrilled that every player we selected had ties with the U-23 national team,” says Blues Director of Soccer Operations Huw Williams. “So far in camp, they have all come to work hard and be a part of this team. I’m very happy with the progress they have made so far and look forward to seeing how they can help us accomplish our goals this season.”
Silva, along with former Mountaineer goalkeeper Sara Keane, opened preseason training camp with FC Kansas City on March 10. Silva was selected with the 19th overall pick at the 2014 NWSL College Draft in January, while Keane was picked up by the squad near the beginning of the month.
Most recently, Silva competed with the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team at the Six Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, throughout the first week of March. The team secured the tournament title with a 2-1 win over Norway on March 5. The squad also defeated Japan, 1-0, and Sweden, 2-1. Silva scored the game-winner against Sweden on March 3.
The Blues are coached by NWSL 2013 Coach of the Year, Vlatko Andonovski. The season officially opens on April 12, when FC Kansas City hosts Sky Blue FC at 8 p.m. ET.
