MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team dropped its Big 12 Conference match against No. 32 Texas Tech, 7-0, today, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (3-13, 0-5 Big 12) fell behind to the Red Raiders after surrendering the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, the No. 38-ranked duo of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo handed the freshmen tandem of Oana Manole
and Kaja Mrgole
its fourth consecutive loss, 8-3. WVU's top pair from a year ago of junior Ikttesh Chahal
and sophomore Hailey Barrett
stumbled against Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde, 8-3. The session was completed at No. 3 doubles with a final of 8-1 in favor of Texas Tech.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, the Mountaineers rebounded and forced three matches to three sets. At No. 1 singles, Barrett fell behind to Kilgo after the first set, 6-2, but came back in the second with a 6-4 win. In the final set, Barrett dropped a back-and-forth match, 7-5.
At No. 2 singles, Mrgole took a one set lead against Teltumbde, 6-4, before dropping the remaining sets, 6-3, 6-3. Chahal won the first set at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (3) against Sanders, but could not continue the momentum into the second and third set, falling 6-0, 6-1.
West Virginia returns to the courts Sunday, March 30, against No. 57 TCU at the Ridgeview Racquet Club at 10 a.m.
