Bohman Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  - Senior swimmer Bryce Bohman has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week following his performance at the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships March 27-29.
 
The Moline, Ill., native earned All-America First Team honors in both the 100 and 200 back with two fifth-place finishes. Bohman becomes the first WVU swimmer to earn two All-America First Team honors in the same year, as well as the first WVU men’s All-America honoree since Jared Goldthorpe in 2011, and the first to earn first team honors since Kevin Donahue in 2008.
 
Bohman closed his WVU swimming career with one of the most decorated seasons in Mountaineer history, setting three individual school records, being a member of four relay school record swims, earning a Big 12 title in the 100 back and earning All-America First Team honors in both the 100 and 200 back.

This Week in Baseball
West Virginia will play four games this week, including its first road Big 12 series of the season … on Tuesday, the Mountaineers will travel to Pitt for a 6 p.m. first pitch … WVU will then travel to TCU this weekend … Friday’s game will start at 7:30 p.m., Saturday’s game will begin at 5 p.m. and Sunday’s finale, which will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest, is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
 
Last Week in Baseball
The Mountaineers went 3-0 last week  … in the home opener at Hawley Field last Tuesday, WVU won 6-3 against Pitt … over the weekend, WVU hosted Baylor at Appalachian Power Park and went 2-0 after Saturday’s game was canceled due to weather … on Friday, the Mountaineers won 8-7 in 12 innings and then won 4-1 on Sunday.

WVU has an overall record of 15-8 and currently sits in first place in the Big 12 with a 2-0 record … despite earning a no-decision on Friday, junior left-hander Harrison Musgrave went seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits … Musgrave struck out five and issued a season-high four walks after entering the game with just four walks the entire season … on Sunday, junior right-hander Sean Carley stayed undefeated in his seventh start of the season for WVU with a complete game … Carley let up one run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk … four players batted over .300 for the week, led by a 5-for-11 performance from junior center fielder Bobby Boyd with five runs, one triple and one RBI … junior second baseman Billy Fleming continues to pace the WVU offense overall, batting .393 with 17 runs, two doubles and 10 RBIs, while senior first baseman Ryan McBroom is hitting .378 with four doubles, six homers and 31 RBIs … McBroom and senior left fielder Jacob Rice hit back-to-back home runs on Sunday against Baylor.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have completed their seasons.
 
Last Week in Swimming &  Diving
Six members of the men’s swimming team traveled to Austin, Texas for the 2014 NCAA Men’s Swimming Championships … the men’s team placed 23rd overall, while California won the overall team competition.
 
Notes & Quotes
Senior Bryce Bohman earned All-America First Team honors in both the 100 back and 200 back, placing fifth in the finals of both events in last weekend’s NCAA Championships … Bohman surged into the finals of the 100 back with the third-best overall time in the prelims at 45.29, once again smashing the current school record … in the evening finals session, Bohman finished with a time of 45.30 … in the 200 back, Bohman topped his previous school record by over one second to earn a seventh-place seed in the prelims with a time of 1:40.36 … the Moline, Ill., native then closed his WVU career out with a school record time of 1:39.83 in the finals Saturday night … Bohman becomes the first WVU men’s All-America honoree since Jared Goldthorpe in 2011, and the first swimmer to earn first team honors since Kevin Donahue in 2008 … in other individual events at the NCAA Championships, junior Tim Squires placed 27th in the 50 free (19.58) and 36th in the 100 free (43.90) … for the relays, the 200 free relay team placed 20th (1:18.67), the 400 medley relay team placed 23rd (3:13.31), the 200 medley relay team placed 27th (1:27.58), the 800 free relay team placed 11th (6:36.19) and the 400 free relay team placed 29th (2:58.46).
 
This Week in Track
West Virginia will have a split squad this weekend ... some competitors will represent the Mountaineers at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., others at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the majority of the team will be at the Ohio Women’s Team Challenge in Athens, Ohio. 
 
Last Week in Track
The Mountaineers competed at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. ... a total of 114 Division I, II and II schools and more than 4,000 men and women competed in the two-day meet. 
 
Notes & Quotes 
Senior Chene Townsend was back in action after redshirting during the indoor season ... Townsend placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.59 ... senior Sarah Martinelli placed seventh among more than 190 participants in the 1,500 meters ... sophomore Marsielle McBeam finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters. 
Coach Sean Cleary: “It was nice to have Chene back in the lineup after not having indoor eligibility. Chene looks to be in great shape and has certainly worked hard over the winter months. I was pleased with a number of performances despite not having been outside for training.”
 
This Week in Gymnastics
Four Mountaineer gymnasts will compete at the 2014 NCAA Athens Regional Championships Saturday, April 5, at 4 p.m., at Stegeman Coliseum … senior Hope Sloanhoffer and freshman Nicolette Swoboda will compete in the all-around, while junior Beth Deal and freshman Alexa Goldberg will compete as beam and bars specialists, respectively.

The Mountaineers did not compete last week.

WVU just missed qualifying as a team for the regional championships, as the team ranks No. 37 in the nation with a 195.15 regional qualifying score (RQS) … Iowa State was the last team to qualify with a 195.16 RQS … Sloanhoffer will rotate with No. 6-ranked and top-seeded Georgia, while Swoboda will rotate with No. 5-seeded NC State … Deal and Goldberg will rotate with sixth-seeded Rutgers … the top two all-arounders not associated with an advancing team will earn a bid to the NCAA National Championships, while all event winners not associated with an advancing team also will move on to the National Championships.

The West Virginia tennis team takes to the road for the final time this season for a pair of Big 12 Conference matches at Oklahoma on April 4 and at Oklahoma State on April 6.

The Mountaineers fell to No. 32 Texas Tech, 7-0, on March 28 and to No. 57 TCU, 4-0, on March 30.

WVU’s last six losses have come to ranked opponents ... the Mountaineers trailed each of the three doubles matches against the Horned Frogs, but stormed back to force two of the three matches into a tiebreaker.
