MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two from the West Virginia University women’s soccer team have been invited to the Canadian Soccer Association Under-20 Women’s National Excel Camp in Portland, Ore.
The camp opened today and will close April 11. Freshman forward Ashley Lawrence
will attend the full camp, while classmate Amandine Pierre-Louis
, also a forward, will participate April 4-6.
A native of Montreal, Quebec, this is the third camp Pierre-Louis has been invited to attend since spending time at camp in Denmark in July. She also participated at the camps held in Vancouver in December and February.
Lawrence, a native of Toronto, Ontario, also was invited to the Denmark camp last July. A member of the 2013 All-Big 12 First Team and All-Big 12 Newcomer Team, Lawrence started 20 of the Mountaineers’ 23 matches in 2013, tallying 12 points on four goals and four assists. She scored the game-winner in WVU’s 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State at the Big 12 Soccer Championship, securing the Mountaineers’ first Big 12 Tournament title.
This month’s camp is the second of the year for the U-20 age group. Led by coach Andrew Olivieri, the athletes are training in advance of the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada, set for Aug. 5-24. The tournament will feature 16 teams and 32 matches across four Canadian cities: Edmonton, Alberta; Toronto, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; and Moncton, New Brunswick.
