Mountaineers Honored for Academics

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Big 12 Conference named 15 West Virginia University student-athletes to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team today.
The squad recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at conference institutions that participate in sports outside of Big 12 competition. The sports included for the 2013-14 season are acrobatics & tumbling, men’s gymnastics, men’s soccer and rifle.
Seven student-athletes from the National Champion WVU rifle team were named to the squad, with two-time honorees Chance Cover (senior), Daniel Sojka (senior), Meelis Kiisk (junior), Thomas Kyanko (junior) and Maren Prediger (junior) earning a spot on the first team. Redshirt-freshman Jean-Pierre Lucas also was named to the first team, and sophomore Garrett Spurgeon was named to the second team.
The men’s soccer team placed eight student-athletes on the team, an increase of six student-athletes from 2013. Two-time honorees Andy Bevin (junior) and Craig Stephens (senior) landed on the first and second team, respectively. Additionally, senior Zach Claudio, juniors Lee Johnston and sophomores Haydon Bennett, Zach Leedom and James Merriam also were named to the first team, while sophomore Ryan Cain was named to the second team.
Of the WVU student-athletes honored, Prediger was nominated with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
In total, 47 student-athletes were honored, with Baylor placing a conference-best 16 on the two teams. Forty-one student-athletes were named to the first team, with all honorees maintaining a 3.20 or better GPA, while six second-team selections held a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.
