MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 11, 2014) – The West Virginia University rowing team travels to West Windsor, N.J., to compete in the Knecht Cup Regatta on Mercer Lake on Saturday, April 12.
"The Knecht Cup Regatta has always been a mainstay of our spring schedule occurring at the midpoint of our season,” says coach Jimmy King. “The breadth of competition will provide good racing opportunities for all of our crews. We'll also get a look at some of the crews we'll face at championship time."
Competition from Mercer Lake begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, with the women’s varsity pair. The Mountaineers’ first event is set for 7:49 a.m. Sunday’s races conclude with the women’s varsity eight grand final at 2:50 p.m
The two-day event will feature crews from 70 different school across the country competing in 34 events. The Mountaineers will have boats competing in the women’s varsity four, women’s second varsity four, women’s varsity eight, women’s second varsity eight, women’s third varsity eight and women’s frosh/novice eight.
This weekend’s competition will be the third official event of the spring for WVU. Last week, the Mountaineers competed in a dual contest against Indiana on Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Ind. WVU tallied four second-place finishes against the Hoosiers.

earned the Mountaineers’ highest finish with a fifth-place finish out of 34 crews, crossing the line in 6:49.14. The second varsity eight crew of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon
, Mollie Rosen
, Allison Coates, Hilary Meale, Mary Ignatiadis, Jeannine McCarty, Elizabeth Duarte
and coxswain Ellen Shular finished with a time of 7:12.88, which was good enough for a 10th-place finish out of 31 entries.
