MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After a split weekend, the West Virginia track and field team will travel to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Invite on Saturday, April 12.
The action will get underway at 10 a.m., Saturday, with the women’s hammer throw and competition will wrap up with the women’s 5000-meter run at 9:15 p.m.
This weekend marks the fourth of competition this spring for the Mountaineers, with four weeks remaining until the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
The spring, to this point, has been highlighted by performances from seniors Sarah Martinelli
and Chene Townsend.
Martinelli has recorded personal-best times in both the 1,500 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Last weekend at the Stanford Invitational, Martinelli posted the second-best time in program history in the steeplechase (10:17.38), eclipsing her previous career-best time by nearly three seconds.
Townsend has returned this spring after redshirting during the winter. She recorded a second-place finish at the Raleigh Relays on March 28, then followed that up with a time of 13.55 in the 100-meter hurdles last weekend at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational. That mark was less than three hundredths of a second off her best time since 2012.
