NORMAN, Okla. – The WVU baseball team fell 5-3 in a back-and-forth game against Oklahoma on Friday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Oklahoma’s Mac James launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Sooners the go-ahead lead.
The series is now tied after WVU won the first game, 7-0, on Thursday evening. West Virginia (18-16, 3-7 Big 12) finished with six hits and did not record an error for the third-straight game. The Sooners improved to 25-15 overall and 5-6 in Big 12 play.
Junior left-hander Harrison Musgrave
(3-3) dropped his second-straight Big 12 contest, pitching eight innings and allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Junior right fielder Brad Johnson
drove in senior left fielder Jacob Rice
to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Rice led off the frame with a single through the left side and advance to third base on a two-base throwing error by James.
The Sooners fought back and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second with three-straight two-out hits. Joshua Ake doubled to right center and then scored on a Craig Aikin triple to center field to tie the game. Aikin gave Oklahoma the 2-1 lead as he scored on a single to right field by Taylor Alspaugh.
WVU came back in the top of the third and tied it at 2-2 following a leadoff walk drawn by senior third baseman Michael Constantini
. Constantini scored on a fielder’s choice to shortstop by junior second baseman Billy Fleming
OU regained a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Sheldon Neuse hit a triple off the left field wall and was driven in by a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of James.
Johnson tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with his second RBI of the evening. A two-out single to left center field scored senior first baseman Ryan McBroom
, who had previously singled.
Junior center fielder Bobby Boyd
had two hits for the Mountaineer offense, while Johnson finished with two RBIs.
Oklahoma starter Adam Choplick (3-2) was effective in a no-decision for the Sooners, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
The Sooners finished with eight hits, led by two hits from Neuse and James. James finished with three RBIs.
Saturday’s game will begin at 1 p.m. EST, and will be televised on affiliates of Fox College Sports Central. The radio broadcast will be on select affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG College.
