MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team concluded its 2014 campaign with a 4-0 loss to No. 67 Kansas State in the first round of the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships, today, at TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Today did not go the way we wanted,” says coach Miha Lisac. “It was not a great match overall, but there are some positive things we can review and build upon going into next year. I thought Kansas State played well, and they did what they needed to do to win. We were too up and down to give ourselves an opportunity to compete.”

The Mountaineers (3-18, 0-10 Big 12) fell behind 1-0 after dropping the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches. The contest between the duo of sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal and the Wildcats’ Petra Niedermayerova and Amina St. Hill was abandoned at 6-5, in favor of K-State, once the team-point was clinched at the conclusion of the No. 2 doubles match.

In singles, WVU’s deficit grew after sophomore Irinka Toidze retired after the first set against Liv Cirnu at No. 5 singles. At No. 1 singles, Barrett fell to No. 51 Niedermayerova in straight sets. After dropping the first set 6-2, Barrett jumped out to a lead in the second but was unable to continue the early momentum, dropping the set, 6-3.

The match-clinching point came at No. 3 singles, where freshman Oana Manole stumbled against Maria Panaite, 6-0, 6-2.

“It has been a rocky season, but we have shown the capability to compete at a higher level,” Lisac says. “There has not been consistency, though, which we will work on and correct. We did not end the way we wanted.”
